Chapter 19

August 31, 1815

Wentworth sipped his first coffee of the day.

Alone.

Laconia had not returned from Bath, but that was hardly unexpected given the circumstance. Anne would not return from Briarwood before tomorrow. The morning room was his and his alone. The first such morning ever at Kellynch-by-the-Sea, and the first one in a long, long time overall. Everywhere he went, he was with people or Laconia. How decidedly odd to have no one else in the house with him now.

The morning room windows looked out over Anne’s flower garden. Next year, it would be more to her liking. This year was all about changing it over to suit her tastes, leaving it unfinished-looking and ragged around the edges, a little like a youth in those awkward years between boyhood and manhood. The morning room satisfied her better. With paper hangings of white and pale yellow in a subtle stripe and the dark wood sideboard, cabinet, table, and chairs polished to a warm glow, she had pronounced it quite comfortable. The dishes she had ordered—yes, they were a luxury, but one he had insisted upon—would not arrive from London for several months yet, but the floral border of dainty violets would complement the room rather nicely. And it would make her smile each morning as she looked at them, which was the whole reason for having them in the first place. Until then, though, these too-fussy-to-start-the-day-with Blue Willow ones would do.

Pendragon’s bones, he missed her. As much now as when Lady Russell had separated them. Should he be resentful that she had done so again? Probably not, but the temptation was there for certain.

“Good morning,” a furry, black-and-white kitten-head peeked up over the edge of the table. Wall’s green eyes glittered in the morning sun, and his black nose twitched, taking in the smells of the breakfast offering. His front half was a convincing cat, but his back half was entirely serpentine, even if it had developed the same black and white coloring as his cat-half. He pressed his thumbed paws on the table and spring-hopped up.

“Are you hungry this morning? Shall I fix you a plate? There is ham, one of your favorites.” Wentworth asked.

“Kellynch ensures that Corn and I are well-fed.” Wall licked his lips, staring at the platter of ham.

Wentworth piled several slices on a plate and set it in front of Wall. Wyrmlings, like young men, were always hungry. “He is an excellent Friend to you.”

Wall dove on the plate like a starving creature. Delightful though he was, watching him eat was not pleasant. After licking the plate clean, he lifted his head. “Is it true that we are the only minor dragons to have a major dragon as a Friend?”

“As I understand it, yes. It is something unique in the Order's history.”

“Our Friend is unique, too, is he not?” Wall sat back on his tail, licked his paw, and ran it over his face.

“Yes, there is no other sea dragon who is part of the Order.”

“Is that a wise plan? There are so many sea dragons.
